Growing up in Tanzania sparked my love of wildlife. A particularly memorable school trip to Mikumi national park in the 7th grade stands out as well. I remember sighting a big male lion from 6 feet away. He sat hunched over a recently killed Cape Buffalo. I remember the smell. The flies and blood on his face. The exhilarating feeling of knowing something primal had taken place. It was both brutal and beautiful, and was in that moment a seed of possibility planted in my mind.

Years laters that seed grew into a desire to spend time away from the computer screen. Software code had become my profession. But the jungles and forests of the world is what I dreamed of going. Photography provided enjoyment and equal part frustration. Capturing the decisive moment that every natural encounters presents became the challenge. It’s been a chastening experience when I missed “the shot”, and a gratifying one when I got it. It also made me realize that being in presence of wild animals forces you to live in the moment. You have to seize it. Appreciate it, because it disappears just as quickly. And maybe that’s what keeps calling me back.
